It's probably about time that I post something in regards to soccer, seeing as the sport has consumed my life for the past 17 years. Beckham not only signed the most lucrative contract in US Soccer history, but will be showcasing his talent on US soil come this summer. I know that here in America soccer is viewed (as Robin Williams so elegantly put it) as "football without pads" or "an interesting sport for damaged people." However, soccer is the fastest growing sport in the country and one of the most popular sports in the world. Just look at the World Cup for case in point. The World Cup received little to no attention from the major sports networks prior to the US hosting the tournament in 1994. But, only 12 years later ESPN, ESPN2, and ABC combined to show every single match from the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The ratings were phenominal considering popular opinion that "soccer doesn't matter." Well folks, if soccer truly did not matter then you wouldn't know who David Beckham is, you wouldn't know about the World Cup, and you certainly wouldn't have millions of people in this country alone dedicating hours per day to the game.
Now on to a ridiculous story. Ron Artest. Now while I shouldn't even give this waste of space a second of my time to write about him, I find myself needing to vent. I guess I don't see the attraction in these self-proclaimed "bad boys" of professional sports. Artest is a waste. Regardless of the numbers he puts up, he's a waste. The fights, the controversial interviews, the off-court problems...bottom line he is truly a nothing. When will this country wake up and stop loving reality TV and soap opera drama. Sports are falling farther from where they should be, and farther from where they were even 10 years ago. What happened to the good guys getting the attention (ie, the late, great Joe DiMaggio)? Why do we posterize and fall in love with TO, Randy Moss, and others of the like? I'm making a plea to true sports fans everywhere to stop supporting these queens. There's no place in sports for it, at least not in the ones without pom-poms and skirts.
It's 6 a.m. and I'm posting...Long day...
Long live sports,
