Cinderella, where are you?

Personally I loved how close some of the games were during the first round. Some of them were painfully close for many bracket watchers. However, if you look at the bracket of 32 now you'll notice something that we haven't seen in a number of years. (I'll give you a hint: Those little numbers next to a team's name are actually mean something this year.)

Take a long hard look at the bracket and notice the lack of any true upsets in the first round. With the exception of a few 8-9 and 6-11 games, there was a lack of that team that really came out and surprised everyone with a statement win. Say what you will about VCU over Duke, I just feel like it lacks that George Mason feel from last year.

Most experts warned about upsets featuring Oral Roberts, Holy Cross, Illinois, Old Dominion, and Long Beach State. However, most of these games weren't even close. Without some kind of upset that notable fans would recognize, most office pools will be won by some nobody who knew how to hit "print" and then knew how to write a name on a line. If you simply pick the higher seed in every bracket thus far you would be doing fairly well. By the looks of ESPN.com you would be doing better than 50% of participants in their pool. Odd...

I'm not saying that Winthrop or VCU won't emerge from this weekend, but judging by the first round it doesn't look good. Looks like Cinderella goes home early this year, those floors are pretty dirty...

Long live sports,
